One point here I point is companies like ello or spotify should put effort on designing a better mechanism which could encourage users to pay premium for their privacy… a simple example is that currently spotify asks to pay premium membership to become ad free, however if the same question is asked to me like go premium to help us stop sharing your data with companies, then definitely I will be more likely to pay for it. .. what you guys think about the importance of better mechanism design…

I have noticed that Sponge Bob is creepining in as a regular cast member on The Marketing Companion. I’m not sure whatthat says about the show. We’ll have to see how it evolves. Thanks for the thoughtful comment and support Alisa!

And thanks a million for the awesome shout-out, Mark. The entire team here at gShift (and myself, especially) can’t be more excited to be partnered with you and Tom. You guys consistently deliver fantastic content, and we are very proud to be a sponsor of this podcast.

As for Ello, I myself have just gained access in the last couple of days, and am looking forward to seeing how it evolves. The potential is there, but whether the community forms around it is difficult to predict, as you and Tom rightfully point out.

Thanks again, and I look forward to the next show. Cheers!

I joined Ello because it feels like something a social media/online marketing person should check out. It’s ugly. I hate it.

Seriously though, it is ugly. Aside from that, obviously they are going to have to make money. It doesn’t matter if the founders don’t care about money, they probably still don’t want to go bankrupt funding a social media platform.

I don’t think people have a problem with that. However, it might have been smart to have a plan and be very up front from the beginning about exactly how they would make that money. If people do care so much about privacy (and you and Tom say we don’t, which I believe), then they should be willing to put their money where their mouth is. Springing it on them later is probably not going to go over well. Trying to support it with optional premium features is going to be tough.

I don’t have high hopes. But I have been wrong once or twice before. Thanks for the intelligent and fun podcast, Mark!

I get that they are making buzz, but it’s all pretty packaging in my opinion. I’ve tried it. I don’t care for it. This is just another flash in the pan like we’ve seen before. They will have to make money somehow and it won’t be from add-ons. Nothing can truly be “ad-free” these days.

My questions too. It is not the first place to use “invitation only” as a strategy. Who knows?

Ello has been growing and using a perfect Marketing strategy. It has been working very well gathering a lot of fuzz, and everybody wants in. People are looking for the next big thing.

Then again, your point about Ads and Brands is very valid. We need brands and to identify with them, but we don’t want brands imposing themselves.

Make me wonder. Why is people so interested? Why is Ello a success so far?
